Our Founder
Sunwide was founded in 2013 by Duff Lin. At the time he was working for an Asian grocery import and export business, where he kept seeing the same two problems. Bubble tea shops and dessert stores could not find a supplier who held stock reliably, and the ingredients on the market had drifted away from what stores were actually making. Australian shops were stuck working with recipes and techniques that Taiwan had already moved past.
Duff is Taiwanese, from Tainan, and bubble tea began in Taiwan. He had factory contacts through his family and friends working inside chain brands in Taiwan and China, so this was the category he knew he could serve properly. He ran Sunwide on his own for the first three years before hiring anyone.
The first customer was a dessert shop introduced by a friend. In the early days they could not even take a full carton at a time. Duff worked on recipes with them rather than simply quoting a price, the shop found its footing, the small store expanded, and that customer now runs a franchise head office.
The hardest stretch came later. During the pandemic, shops closed and stock sat in the warehouse for about six months. Freight rates then rose to nearly ten times what they had been. Duff absorbed part of that increase rather than passing all of it to customers, cut costs on his own side, and carried the holding and cash flow pressure. At the same time he worked with customers on new flavours and new ways to sell, without knowing whether any of it would pay off.
Ask him why customers stay and he does not talk about price first.
Our price is not always the cheapest, but it can be the most stable.
What he points to instead is being there when something goes wrong, understanding what a store actually does day to day, moving between factories so customers have room to adapt, and telling a customer when a product is not right for them.
We do not just sell ingredients. When something goes wrong, we are there.
In 2021, Duff's story was featured by Taiwan's Overseas Community Affairs Council in a profile on Taiwanese entrepreneurs bringing local flavours to Australia. He has also served on the committee of the Melbourne Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce and was recognised with its Young Entrepreneur Award in 2019.
